Look Out Point, Ampang, Kuala Lumpur

Kuala LumpurSo I went to this place called Look Out Point (very original name that), located somewhere on the hillside along the Ulu Langat Road. The place consists of a few eating places (two restaurants and a cafe) next to each other. and a purpose-built, multi-level viewing platform. There have been many blog postings about this place, some say it's nice while others are not so favourable (usually on the food). Well, here's my unbiased opinion.

(post continue below...)

1. The View - This is the main reason for this place to exist. As you can see from the pics below, the place gives you a good view of Kuala Lumpur especially during sunset and at night. Some tips for those who want to take nice photos;

  • For sunset, evening and night landscape shots, bring a tripod! When I was there, there were so many people with nice DSLRs and I was probably the only one with a tripod. I mean, do these people really can hold their cameras steady for 10-20 seconds?
  • For people shots with nice sunset background, bring a flash. Or at least, learn to use the camera's on-board flash for fill.
  • For night shots of people, it would be nice if you have a fast lens e.g. f1.7 or f2.0. The bokeh of the city lights can be very nice indeed, depending on your lens.

2. The Food - There's Gasoline (Chinese food), Bread and Olives (Western-ish) and a cafe. We went to Bread and Olives and didn't really check the others so I can't speak of them. But the pizza at Bread and Olives are quite big for two person. Unless you're an American. Our orders were two cans of Coke, a chocolate milkshake, a plate of samosas and the big Burj al Arab (wat) pizza totalled RM50.60. So it's cheap. Many have said this in other blogs, and I concur - the food is meh at best. Or as a Malaysian would say, "Ok only laa..."

3. Getting There - there are many instructions on the web on how to get there, and some of these instructions are not good at all actually. Especially if you're not familiar with the general area beyond Ampang Point. I'm lazy, so my only contribution here is - go check it out on Google Map here. We couldn't find the place by following one of those stupid directions some bloggers put up, but we just asked an uncle at one of the little shops by the road side and he gave us the good one.

4. The Photos - here are some photos and shots info. Click 'em to embiggen (800px or so). I use several lenses here, the long one is Sigma 70-300mm APO DG (Pentax mount), a Pentax smc DA 17-70mm SDM and DA 18-55mm II for the first two shots. By the way, anyone with money to spare are welcome to contact me and negotiate the price for any of these pics :) Profits will go towards purchases of more lenses. I like the last one below - might just print it for my office or something.

  • Setting up the camera - we arrived around 6.30pm so there were many tables available. I set up the camera and the tripod next to my seat, with unobstructed view of the landscape.
